Online tutoring for K-6

Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a psychological framework that can greatly inform K-6 education practices. Developed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, SDT suggests that individuals have three basic psychological needs - autonomy, competence, and relatedness - that are essential for their motivation and well-being.

In the context of K-6 education, the application of SDT involves creating a classroom environment that promotes students' autonomy. This can be achieved by offering choices within the curriculum, allowing students to make decisions about their learning, and involving them in goal-setting processes. By fostering autonomy, teachers enable students to feel a sense of ownership, resulting in increased motivation and engagement. Online offers another layer to autonomy.

Moreover, SDT emphasizes the importance of developing students' competence. In the K-6 classroom, this means providing developmentally appropriate challenges and scaffolding, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge at their own pace. Recognizing students' achievements and progress also contributes to enhancing their sense of competence, which fuels motivation and self-esteem.

Finally, promoting a sense of relatedness in K-6 education involves creating a positive and inclusive classroom community. Teachers can facilitate this by fostering positive relationships with the online student, encouraging collaborative learning, and valuing diversity. By nurturing social connections, student(s) develop a sense of belonging and support, which has a profound impact on their well-being and motivation to learn.

In summary, The Tutor Guru applies the principles of Self-Determination Theory in Online K-6 education that fosters students' motivation, engagement, and well-being by addressing their fundamental psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

One of the fundamental goals of The Tutor Guru is to train the student to think more metacognitively- to have a critical awareness of one's own thinking and learning helps the student get to know the self and build strengths.

Online learning is efficient and effective because it saves time and teaches real life skills while incorporating core subjects. I often hear, "My child learns better in person. He does not focus well with online learning." Online learning is not going away and requires a set of unique skills, like being a self-starter and the ability to focus, read directions and interpret material. Metacognition is the state of being aware of one's own thought process. Once your child has that, he can do anything, including online learning. It is the present, it is the future, it is at the core of communication, a bridge.
